| The
guidelines provided below will help you to make a decision whether
you are planning to implement a software system for the first time
or change/update your current software in use. |
|
| 1.
RESEARCH |
 |
| Check
web sites, magazines, or visit computer stores to find out if the
software you are looking for is already available. Check the functionality,
price, ease of use, implementation, hardware requirements, network
capability, among others. |
| 2.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS |
| Once
you did your research, you probably have some ideas of what will
be the best solution to your business. Based on the type of software
you want, your hardware requirements will vary. It is always advisable
to choose software first and then find hardware/Network that meets
the software requirement. |
|
3.
DECISIONS |
| Now
that you have several options, it is time to choose what type of
software and hardware based on functionality and price. It's also
good idea to implement new system step by step. That is, start from
a single computer with multi-user capability software that can be
customized later. This way, when you need to customize a part of
the software you avoid using several softwares, one for each task.
|
| 4.
PACKAGED OR CUSTOMIZED SOFTWARE |
| If
you decided for a general packaged software you find in computer
stores, your implementation is simple. If you come to a conclusion
that no general packaged software meets your needs then you need
to start looking for a software developer. |
| 5.
CHOOSING A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER |
| To
find a software developer who can meet your expectations, call for
some local developers. After few contacts, you will get some idea
about how long it takes to write a new program, customize an existing
program and how they charge (flat fee or by hour), etc. |
| 6.
